Long time since I shared. Yes, time management is something to blog about but not now. Still trying to just get stuff done. So today's blog idea was prompted by a friend with a very bad cold. She is not here in Japan and is too sick to go shopping right now, but it reminded me that Japan has its own special food for colds and illness: Okayu (Oh-kah-you). Forgive my attempts at phonetic spelling. I hope you can figure it out.
Okayu is made from watery white rice to which you add a bit of dried bonito fish, which is called katsuobushi, an umeboshi (pickled plum), and a little soy sauce. Voila! Sick people food. There's another home remedy my mother-in-law made for me many years ago that involves a raw egg, sake and sugar. It's called tamagozake. Probably works just as well to down a raw egg, slam a shot and forget the sugar. Dunno. I prefer hot tea.
Here are proper recipes for okayu and tamagozake if you are interested. Actually, they both look pretty good.
Stay warm and remember to wash your hands and gargle. That's what the entire Japanese nation is doing right now!
